oh the weather outside is frightful, but the stout is so delightful

17 Nov

Tonight’s weather made me exclaim, “I need to move to Hawaii!” In light of that not happening, the next best thing that came to mind was getting warm sipping on a stout. Down in the beer cellar I found The Dogfather Imperial Stout from Laughing Dog Brewing that we bought about a year ago at our favorite bottle shop, The Bridgetown Beerhouse. It sounded perfect.

The Dogfather poured beautifully, extremely dark and rich with a thick, creamy, tan head. It had a strong, roast scent on the nose, accompanied by a slight toasted caramel or toffee smell. The nose also had a hint of the alcohol that was to come. As it warmed, the nose of the beer settled a bit and took on more rich, chocolate notes, much like this beer tastes. The Dogfather starts with a delicious, chocolate malt, followed by noticeable hop. The hop isn’t offensive, but rather adds a slight bitterness that accompanies the alcohol at the back end of this beer. At 11%, the alcohol is definitely prominent, helping to warm me on this cold, stormy night.  And like the godfather, if you’re not careful, The Dogfather could take you down.

Sounds like a lovely way to spend a rainy night! I am eyeballing a couple of Christmas beers tonight, myself. Kind of like Macy’s…I am all about celebrating early!
