Happy Valentine’s Day!

14 Feb

IMG_0865 Whether you are celebrating the landing of cupid’s arrow or the feast of a mysterious saint or whether you prefer to observe Galentine’s Day, I hope you are doing so with a beer. Nothing better than raising a pint of lovely craft beer to toast your friends, your mom, your partner, your daughter’s birthday, your own awesomeness…you name it.

For such a special occasion, you may want to consider a 22oz bottle of Block 15’s Super Nebula.  We just enjoyed the 2011 Vintage and it is just God Damn Beautiful!

From the pour I could tell it was going to be dark and rich. I was not disappointed by the powerful vanilla, sweet malts, booziness and oak notes in the aroma. As we took a drink, the table went quiet. Then we all agreed it was like eating a piece of chocolate cake or milk chocolate. There was a very light breadiness, lots of cocoa and sweetness, balanced by the roasted malts and alcohol. And there was a big, beefy mouth feel…reminding us of a giant Cab or California Zin. A gorgeous beer that would be perfect paired with with dessert or a Cuban cigar.

Given the complexity and boldness of this beer, and its graceful aging, I started reading about Nebula. Apparently a nebula is created at the end of a star’s life where its core becomes more energized and radiates a shell (the nebula).* Nebulae are extremely complex, have varied morphologies, and return material back to the galaxy playing a crucial role in its equilibrium.

I will congratulate Block 15 for making a beer that stands up to that kind of name! Complex, beautiful, bold, and dynamic it is. This beer is an example of a bourbon barrel-aged chocolate stout at the top of its game.  And with another in the basement, I hope it ages well! Although, Wikipedia warns me that nebulae are relatively short-lived…hmmm….lasting only a few tens of thousands of years – OH! well in that case – we’re good!

Happy drinking and Happy Galentine’s Day to all my ladies!!

* This is by all means the super simplified and bare bones explanation – don’t’ expect me to get all technical and super smarty pants while I am drinking beer, a’ight?? If you want to know more, or you want to argue with my statement, don’t bother, just go Google it yourself.

How about oregon’s statehood day? We had an oatmeal stout for the occasion.
